Big Boi of Outkast was recently on Microphone Check, a podcast hosted by Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and journalist Frannie Kelley.
It’s a fascinating discussion about the rise of Outkast, Big Boi’s life and career, and his continued pursuit to hone his craft as the best MC in the game.
The real gem in this interview is twofold:
Obviously Big & Dre were influenced by ATCQ. Big Boi says to Ali that once they heard Midnight Marauders & Low End Theory, Outkast knew they needed to step it up.
When Outkast released Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and ATLians, that also pushed ATCQ to step up their game. When Ali says this to Big Boi, you can hear his mind get blown out of his head cuz they’re such huge fans of each other.
And of course, Frannie has to bring up that album that could’ve been, a complete collaboration between A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast.
As a fan of hip hop and amazing music in general, FUCK! That would’ve been so AMAZING TO HEAR!
